Mage |
"All things are divided into the twin forces of
Order and Chaos, Forever contending for dominance. Life is something that occurs in the
interface; Not in the writhing discord of utter Chaos, Nor in the flatline perfection of Pure
Order, But somewhere between." "... It is the Basis of Magic; The imposition of Order on
formless Chaos, The release of joyous Chaos into the gray monotony of Order ..
This is the true Magic. All else is Shadow."
Neil Gaiman, "The Books of Magic"
Able to weave and shape the ethereal magic of the Realms, the mage possesses
diverse powers of combat, protection and transportation. The mage's arsenal
is crucial to survival for mages tend to be weak and scrawny. Their frail
shells belie the powerful magicks within. Young magi must be wary for
their magical prowess is frequently insufficient to guard them from harm. But as
their experience grows and their knowledge increases, the mage evolves into
a being capable of wielding awesome powers of devastation. They are also
renowned for their skills in scribing scrolls and brewing potions to aid
those unskilled in magic.
Relying heavily upon their mental acumen, a mage must always maintain their intelligence.
Mages who grow sloth and dullard have far more difficulty in the casting of spells. The spells
they do cast are far less potent than those of a mage who has not let his mind deteriorate.
Coupled with intelligence is a mage's need for wisdom. Without the judicious
application of intelligence, magic is a dangerous ally. Ultimately, so much
time exerted in study results in mages being slightly less physically capable
than other classes. Mages tend to be weaker than most classes and deficient
in strength.
The art of Magick may be pursued by Humans, Elves, Pixies, Half-Elves,
Drow, Gith, Sea-Elves and Gnomes. |
