Thoric |

Thoric has been busy trying to conjure up free time in which
he can create new and unique elements to bring enjoyment to all who enter the Realms of
Despair!
Thoric (Derek Snider) started up Realms of
Despair in July of 1994 on a lowly 486-25 with 8 megs of ram running Linux 1.0. The
machine was also shared with BBS users running various shell programs (ftp, lynx, telnet,
gopher, etc), and had to endure kernel recompiles.
Today Realms of Despair runs on a PII-333 with 256 megs of ram, running linux 2.2. The
only other things that run on this machine are the www.game.org website, the ftp.game.org MUD ftp archive, and development on Realms of Despair,
and the SMAUG MUD code base.
SMAUG is Realms of Despair's contribution back to the MUD community, and is the most
advanced publically available MUD codebase available.
He has been programming for over 20 years, (I'm not THAT old... I'm 31).
Other entertainment projects he's created include The Internet TeleCafe and NetTrivia.
He's heavily interested in medieval fantasy (he even has a pipe collection, and makes
elderberry wine).
He also plays electric guitar, and listens to heavy metal music (like old Black Sabbath and Metallica).
As well as all that, he was born on Halloween (Samhain), and has an interest in the occult (witchcraft,
herbalism, etc). (Strange guy eh?) |
